WORKING GROUP 1 – Epistemological, theoretical and analytical issues on value orientations

WG1 focuses on providing the epistemological and theoretical foundation necessary for a robust study of value orientations. Our primary goal is to reach a deeper understanding of values by bringing different academic perspectives together instead of sticking to just one field of study. We critically examine traditional analytical categories and question their underlying assumptions, aiming to ensure our conceptual tools stay relevant and adaptable to contemporary social dynamics. A key part of our work also involves providing conceptual clarity by distinguishing between closely related terms such as values, norms, attitudes, and beliefs, which helps reduce ambiguity.

To achieve these goals, our planned activities include a literature review, a comprehensive scoping review, roundtable discussions, newsletters, a doctoral thesis competition, and a photo competition. Currently, WG1 brings together more than 75 experts from sociology, political science, psychology, economics, communication, philosophy, and more. We believe this diversity is one of our greatest strengths, as it broadens our perspective and significantly strengthens our ability to understand the profound changes reshaping our shared values today.
